Designing a Modern Kitchen for a Villa or Bungalow
Kitchens in villas and bungalows were designed for a different way of living. They are often enclosed, short on storage, and disconnected from outdoor areas. Renovating one is an opportunity to improve the whole home's flow, but the new room should still relate to the scale and character of the original building.
Start with movement through the space. Consider how people enter, cook, gather, and reach adjacent dining or outdoor areas. A generous island can be useful, but only when there is enough clearance around it. In a narrower room, a peninsula or well-planned galley may provide more storage and a better working layout.
Cabinetry has the greatest visual impact. Shaker-style doors, framed panels, furniture-like details, and carefully proportioned handles can suit a period home without making the kitchen feel themed. Full-height storage can be balanced with open walls, glazed cabinets, or shelving so the room does not become visually heavy.
Choose materials for durability as well as appearance. Timber, stone, tile, and painted cabinetry can age gracefully when their colours and textures are coordinated with existing floors, trims, and adjoining rooms. Repeating a small detail from the original house often creates more continuity than copying every period feature.
Lighting should be layered. Combine practical task lighting over benches with ambient ceiling lights and decorative fittings that suit the room's proportions. Natural light is equally important, so changes to windows and doors should be considered alongside the kitchen plan rather than after cabinetry is finalised.
Finally, plan services early. Older floors and walls can make plumbing, extraction, electrical upgrades, and appliance installation more involved. Coordinating these elements before work begins protects original fabric and avoids compromises later.
A well-designed character-home kitchen should work effortlessly while looking as though it belongs. The goal is not to recreate an old kitchen, but to build a modern one with the warmth, craftsmanship, and proportion the home deserves.
